NASCAR's Jim Hunter Dies At 71. NASCAR executive Jim Hunter passed away at the age of 71 according to recently unveiled news reports. He passed away in Daytona Beach, Florida after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He spent many years in the industry, first as a newspaper reporter, then as a public relations official and later on as an executive.

NASCAR president Mike Helton notes that Jim Hunter will never be able to be replaced. In the wake of Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001, Hunter played a pivotal role keeping NASCAR scrutiny to a minimum.

Although Hunter loved the sport, he also is said to have loved the people more. Everyone in the sport is said to have considered him a friend, and it's a big loss for the sport.
