George "Sparky" Anderson Dead at 76. The famed baseball manager, Sparky Anderson, who worked with the Detroit Tigers, is dead at the age of 76. This is a sad moment for baseball a few short days after the end of the World Series.

Anderson died of complications related to dementia, according to a statement released.

The baseball icon played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1959, suiting up for many games at second base. He was signed in 1953 by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a free agent, but did not play.

The manager was with the Detroit Tigers from 1979-1995 and took them on to win the 1984 World Series.

He's a historic figure not only the the world of sports, but also baseball as a whole. He will be missed as he was well loved.
